“Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Tolstoy's opening line for Anna Karenina may still be very relevant to the technology industry, although slightly tweaked. “Unhappy technology companies are all alike; every happy company is happy in its own way.”
This part of the book looks at happy technology companies and at technology companies which are unhappy now, but which were happy for a while. The latter ones are confident, or at least hopeful, that they can outsmart their rivals again. They have tasted the good life, and they cannot get enough of it.
“China has taught us an important lesson: that Korea and Japan can be taken over and that they are not so big.”
